Waikato River Canoe Adventures
(Waikato taniwharau he piko he taniwha)
The Waikato River the river of a hundred bends and at each bend a taniwha.
The Waikato River is steeped in history good and bad. It has great spiritual meaning for the people of Tainui, the people of the river. It was in its day a main food source and highway to the people, it was a great source of life and mana. (Prestige, power, control)
Today it is still a life source to the people of the Waikato. It supplies water to its major towns and cities and with seven hydro power stations on it; it supplies power to Waikato industry.
The Waikato River is not so much a main highway these days but the history remains. Its beauty and mana remain, with people who love and respect it, people with a passion for this Mighty River.
Wiseway Canoe Adventures are one of these people with a passion for this beautiful river and can tell you some of its history as we guide you through a small section of its beauty. The canoe was of great importance to the Maori people in its time.
It is used mainly for ceremonial event these days. But to Wiseway there is still only one way to see this mighty river and that is by canoe. The silent beauty will take you back to a time gone by. You will see how easy and how beautiful it is from water level.
Meander down the river at your own pace with not a care in the world, but beware the Taniwha.
